If you’re looking for a rimfire rifle that can reach out and touch something—like prairie dogs or ground squirrels on those wide-open Kansas and Oklahoma fields—the Franklin Armory F17-L in .17 Winchester Super Magnum is worth a look. It’s different than your typical .22, offering a flatter trajectory and more punch at longer ranges. Plenty of folks around Wichita are getting into the longer-range rimfire competitions, and this rifle fits that bill.

How it Works
The F17-L features a self-regulating piston system. That means you don’t have to fiddle with gas adjustments when you change from shooting suppressed to unsuppressed – it adjusts automatically. That’s a plus if you plan to add a can. It also keeps the action cleaner by diverting gas and carbon away from the bolt. The 20-inch barrel, threaded at the muzzle, maximizes the .17 WSM’s velocity. Expect good accuracy with quality ammunition. The OD green finish is durable and reduces glare.
Features
- Piston System: The Osprey Defense piston system simplifies things, automatically adjusting for whether or not you’re using a suppressor. Less time adjusting, more time shooting.
- Threaded Barrel: The 1/2×28 threading lets you attach a muzzle device or suppressor without needing adapters.
- Durable Finish: The hardcoat anodized finish on the receiver is tough, resisting wear and corrosion.
- M-LOK Handguard: The 15-inch M-LOK handguard provides plenty of space to attach accessories like lights or bipods.
- Fixed Stock: The fixed Bravo C stock offers a stable shooting platform.
Who is this rifle for?
This rifle isn’t the first one most folks around here pick up—it’s not a .22 for plinking. It’s for shooters wanting more range and accuracy from a rimfire. It’s a good fit for competitors shooting NRL22 or PRS rimfire, or folks hunting varmints where a longer, flatter shot is needed. It also works well for anyone who wants a rimfire rifle that won’t require constant cleaning. It’s solid for longer-range Kansas prairie dog hunts, or popping squirrels in the pasture.
Things to consider
- .17 WSM ammunition is more expensive and harder to find than .22 LR.
- This is a dedicated varmint/target rifle – it might not be your first choice for general-purpose shooting.
